Recorded over the course of 2 sessions in February and March of 2022, Coalescence marks the debut recording of pungmul (Korean drumming) artist Suwan Choi on the Grammy-nominated Asian Improv Records label. Along with multi-instrumentalist Jeff Chan, Coalescence offers listeners a strong document of the creative voice this duo has developed over the course of their 7-year musical partnership.

Coalescence is a collection of performances created in the moment, exploring the array of rhythmic diversity, tonal nuance and emotional expressivity these two musicians bring to their work. Creating a music informed by Korean traditional music, jazz, and creative/new and extemporaneous music practices, the work of these artists is distinctive and unique – a reflection through sound of the Pan-Asian diasporic experience, and one that can only have been created in Chicago.

Coalescence features high-quality recording by Caleb Willitz, a beautiful visual design by Lauren Deutsch and liner notes by noted scholar/ethnomusicologist Donna Lee Kwon.
